Michael L’Africain

Assistant Coach

L'Africain's coaching journey saw him as Assistant Coach with the BlackJacks in 2021 and 2023, and with the Newfoundland Growlers in 2022. Transitioning from his illustrious playing career, L'Africain assumed the role of lead assistant coach of the University of Ottawa men’s basketball team in 2018, following a landmark five-year tenure as a player for the Gee-Gees from 2011 to 2016.

The former point guard led Ottawa’s rise during his five years in garnet and grey, orchestrating an efficient offensive attack from the backcourt to bring Ottawa to the national tournament for four consecutive seasons. In the 2015-16 season, the Oakville, Ontario, native demonstrated the full range of his abilities by leading the Gee-Gees in points (20.4 per game), and assists (101).

L'Africain left uOttawa as the team’s all-time leader in assists (406) and ranked fourth all-time in points (1,272). L'Africain played two professional seasons in Europe before returning to Canada to focus on coaching. He played in Portugal and Slovakia, averaging 14.4 points per game in his final pro season.
