Ottawa BlackJacks Sign Former CEBL Champion Negus Webster-Chan

Jul 20, 2021

The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday the signing of Negus Webster-Chan.

A six-foot-seven guard from Toronto, Webster-Chan has played 80 games as a pro in Canada, including 24 games in the CEBL and 44 games in the NBA G-League, averaging 5.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 16.2 minutes.

With six years of professional experience, Webster-Chan spent the first two CEBL seasons with the Saskatchewan Rattlers, where he helped his team win the inaugural 2019 CEBL Championship with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists August 25 against Hamilton in the title game. During the 2020 CEBL Summer Series, he averaged 12.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 25.0 minutes in five games and notched a season-high 20 points, shooting six-for-11 from behind the arc July 26 against Niagara. Webster-Chan started the 2021 campaign with the Rattlers before being released by the team and signed by Ottawa on July 17.

From 2016-18, the Canadian guard played with the Raptors 905 of the NBA G-League, where he reached the championship final for two consecutive seasons. During the 2016-17 campaign, he won the NBA G-League title over the Rio Grande Vipers alongside future Raptors Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet. He dished a season-high five assists January 4 against Canton.

Collegiately, Webster-Chan averaged 5.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 21.6 minutes in 62 games split between the University of Hawaii and the University of Missouri. In 2014-15, with Hawaii, the Toronto native finished the season sixth in the Big West in three-point field goals made (64) and ninth in three-point field goal percentage (.410). He recorded 11 double-digit scoring performances and posted a season-high 20 points February 26 against Long Beach State, equaling a team season high with six three pointers.

In a related move, the BlackJacks released guard Kyle Johnson. He totalled 12 points and 12 rebounds in four games for Ottawa this season.

Ottawa (3-5) will travel to Hamilton next to take on the Honey Badgers (6-3) on July 21 at 7:00 p.m. ET followed by a game against Niagara Lions (4-3) on July 24 at 7:00pm ET. The BlackJacks will then return home to TD Place on July 26, where they will play host to the Saskatchewan Rattlers.

The team is permitted to admit up to 1,000 fans for its final two home games. Tickets are now on sale at www.theblackjacks.ca/tickets.

All CEBL games will be available for live streaming on the CEBL’s new OTT streaming service CEBL+, cbcsports.ca, the free CBC Gem streaming service, the CBC Sports App for iOS and android devices, and on Twitch.
